Our 2nd Grade STEM Team are working on measurement! The unit focuses on the "big ideas" that common substances have physical properties that can be observed and measured. The unit emphasizes the following enduring understandings:
This weeks focus question is: Can you compare objects using a balance scale?STEM Team members worked in groups to compare and find the mass of objects. The students collected data by opening a document from Edmodo in an app called Notability. The notability app allows students to annotate documents by typing, printing and sketching illustrations.
- Classifying common substances according to observable properties, such as color, size, shape texture, hardness, liquid or solid, sinking or floating.
- Metric measurement of length, distance, volume, and mass of objects.
- Compare and contrast the mass of objects using a balance.
- Classification of substances a single substances or mixtures.
- Making purposeful observations that generate questions and lead to planning and conducting simple investigations.
- Communicating and presenting findings of observations and investigations using evidence.
- Repeating investigations to demonstrate similar results.
