Dear Families,
The Jeffers STEM program is off to a fantastic start and I am having a blast getting to know your child!
The STEM standard being assessed on the report card is: Applies or uses the design process to complete a project.
STEM team members use the design process for all challenges. Students are given a problem to solve or challenge to conquer, brainstorm possible solutions to solve the challenge, choose a solution, build the item, evaluate, redesign and/or rebuild if needed and collect data to share with their peers.
During trimester 1 our focus is on understanding, using and applying the design process with all STEM challenges. By the end of trimester 2 and 3, each student will be assessed by demonstrating and describing the steps to the design process.
The following are the trimester rubrics used to assess your child.
Trimester 1:
3- Meets with Proficiency ~ Consistently demonstrates achievement by applying and using the design process with STEM challenges.
2- Developing Proficiency ~ Inconsistently demonstrates achievement by applying and using the design process with STEM challenges.
1 – Not Proficient ~ Requires more time and experience at applying and using the design process with STEM challenges.
Trimester 2:
3- Meets with Proficiency ~ Consistently demonstrates and describes 4-6 steps of the design process.
2- Developing Proficiency ~ Consistently demonstrates and describes 2-3 steps of the design process.
1 – Not Proficient ~ Requires more time and experience. Consistently demonstrates and describes 0-1 steps of the design process.
Trimester 3:
3- Meets with Proficiency ~ Consistently demonstrates and describes 5-6 steps of the design process.
2- Developing Proficiency ~ Consistently demonstrates and describes 3-4 steps of the design process.
1 – Not Proficient ~ Requires more time and experience. Consistently demonstrates and describes 0-2 steps of the design process.
In addition, students will be assessed on the following behaviors during STEM class. Showing respect for self, others, and property; Participating appropriately; and Using class time productively.
The following scoring rubric will be used for behavior:
C- Consistent
I - Inconsistent
N - Needs Improvement
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Thank you.
Betsy Kipling
