Our 1st Grade STEM Team are working on the unit Sorting Things Out! The unit focuses on the "big ideas" that common substances have physical properties that can be observed. The unit emphasizes the following enduring understanding of science concepts:
). Objects can be sorted by their physical characteristics, such as size, shape,m color, texture, sinking or floating and magnetic or nonmagnetic.
). Identification of materials that are attracted by magnets.
). Observation of like and unlike magnetic poles and how they repel and attract.
). Properties of water as a solid and as a liquid.
). Scientist observations using the senses.
). Generating questions based on observation.
). Planning and conducting simple investigations.
). Sharing ideas about science and communicating scientific concepts.
During this unit, your child will use observations skills to sort objects and describe their similarities and differences. Your child will be activity involved in observing, questioning, conducting investigation, and recording ideas about science. Asking questions, developing solutions, interpreting and reconstructing information, and reflecting on his/her knowledge are all components incorporated into this unit.
