Kindergarten
With partners, the Kindergarten STEM team started their iMovie Trailers. The students used images from the structures we have been studying, 3-D forms and examples of symmetrical and asymmetrical images.
Structures: Eiffel Tower, Tower Bridge-London, Seattle Space Needle, Petronas Twin Tower and Taj Mahal. Forms: Rectangular Prism, Triangular Prism, Cylinder, Cube, Cone, Pyramid and Sphere
1st- 2nd Grade:
One of our focuses over the last two sessions was on Internet Safety. The term Eye Pollution was introduced. We discussed that the Internet is an amazing place with many places for us to visit and learn about. However, we have to be careful what we read and see. Anything that is on the internet that we should not look at, we call “eye pollution.” As a class, STEM team members brainstormed things that would be eye pollution, such as: things that are too weird, scary images, gross images, mean images, images of private body parts and bad words. We discussed how our bodies know when we are seeing something we shouldn’t and if we are ever on the Internet and something makes us feel uncomfortable, we should immediately get off the device and tell a trusted adult. We also discussed that the only time they are to be on Internet in STEM class is when Mrs. Kip has given them permission and they are only to go to the places that pertain to our STEM project or challenge. I encourage you as a family to discuss eye pollution with your child and make some family rules about internet searching at home.
Our first and second graders learned how to use google search by using the microphone function. STEM team members gathered images on the structures we have studied to help create their iMovies.
3rd Grade
We deviated from our Structure Project in 3rd grade last week. We became engineers and completed an Oil Spill Lab! Please ask your child about this incredible experience!
3-4th Grade
Internet Safety was also our first discussion in 3rd and 4th grade. We discussed the term Internet Pollution and that sometimes inappropriate images and information can be put on the Internet. We discussed that our school has an an Internet filter. The internet filter filters the bulk of the inappropriate material, however just like a water filter can not filter ALL the chemicals from water, sometimes things slip by. We discussed that if this were to happen, we should immediately get off the device and tell a trusted adult. We discussed that we should do this at school, home and friends houses.
Our third and fourth graders also learned how to use google search, to search for images. STEM team members gathered images on the structures we have studied to help create their iMovies.
Please Note: A permission slip is coming home TODAY with your child regarding the use of Edmodo in STEM class. Please read the information, contact me with any questions and return the permission slip as soon as possible. Edmodo is a private learning environment that is managed by the teacher, students can only interact with others in the class. Edmodo provides a safe and easy way for students to share their projects with an authentic audience.
