Kindergarten, 1st & 2nd Grades:
Week 2 was filled with creativity, collaboration, communication and critical thinking! Our focus, Kindergarten through 2nd grade, was on the concepts of sharing and using the design process to complete our project. We read the book, Should I Share My Ice Cream? by one of my favorite children’s authors Mo Willems. Students were then put in random teams where they had to brainstorm all the things they had in common with each other. The groups then selected ONE item to build, out of blocks, that represented their team. For example, teams built a boat, because they all love to go boating, a princess castle, because they all love princesses, Pizza Hut, because they all love pizza. Teams then presented and shared their structure to the class. Classmates asked questions and gave compliments to the presenting group. Throughout the project, students also worked on sharing their space, materials (blocks) and friends. We end every STEM class by shaking hands with our teammates, looking each other in the eyes and saying thank you.
3rd & 4th Grades:
Our focus for 3rd and 4th grade teams were similar to our K-2. However, we more heavily focused on understanding and using the design process. Each team brainstormed together and selected ONE item to build, out of blocks, that represented their team. The creations ranged from the Eiffel Tower, because the team would like to visit the structure someday to a chair and book because the team loves to read. Teams each took a roll in the presenting and sharing process. Classmates asked questions and gave compliments to the presenting group. We end every STEM class by shaking hands with our teammates, looking each other in the eyes and saying thank you.
